Haitian Community | Regenerative Habitat
Haitian Community is an effort by a group of 6 professionals to conceptualize the construction of quality, earthquake- and hurricane-proof, immediate shelter for the victims of the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The project entails a cluster of 8 homes on one well-landscaped acre of land, as well as a centralized sewage septic system drain field and community groundwater well, pump, ultraviolet light water treatment system, and community storage tank. It would also feature the use of nearly 100% Haitian materials, and 100% Haitian labor (through skills training) to build houses subsequent to the first one. The aim is to improve the quality of homes over what existed before the earthquake and to make their homes energy and water efficient and sufficient. Eventually the project would involve enhancing the shelters with green and sustainable features that include solar energy, wind energy, and the capture of rainwater for domestic use.
FutureProof LLC was commissioned to prepare a sustainable site Master plan on a one acre site for a community of homes. These homes would have their own roof/solar power, utilize roof rain water to cistern system, and have their own vegetable gardens They would also be served by a centralized sewage drain field, share a central grazing field for livestock, grass farming and manure collection, share a wooded area for banana, mango, and other tree crops, and share a retention pond for deep water aquaculture.
FutureProof LLC was also asked to prepare a pictorial view of this development and a section showing the homes on the surrounding developed property.
